Alison Lester is a children's book author and illustrator. We meet Alison inside her home in the country and hear her talking about her love of reading as a young child. She describes how people she knows often become characters in her books. Alison talks about her own artistic style and how hard she finds it to change. We see her working in her large studio with large windows and lots of natural sunlight.

Ideas for using this resource

Watch this interview with Alison Lester and think about how and where she works and what influences her illustrations

  • What art materials are arranged on her desk and why do you think she has more than one desk
  • Notice how carefully Alison concentrates when she is drawing and painting, why is this important?
  • List at least three things you learn from Alison.
  • Discuss and share your ideas with each other.

Make notes and keep your observations fresh in your mind as you think about how you might write and illustrate your own picture storybook.
